"Escaping the Myth" for FREE?!

I have an important question to ask. If the "Escaping the Myth"
event happening up in Troy, Michigan on July 21 and 22 were FREE,
how many more people would go? I'm wondering, for those people who
might otherwise be interested in attending, is the cost the main
obstacle? Is the time and/or travel the main obstacle? Believe me,
any or all of those would be perfectly understandable. If it were
free, how many more would attend? (Again, this is specifically
about the one in Troy, Michigan, happening July 21 and 22; I'm NOT
just asking who would want to go to it somewhere at some time if it
were free.)

I ask because I'm considering doing something bold and daring--or
maybe just stupid (I'm not sure which, yet). I'm thinking of giving
away tickets for free (but no more than 50 total), and then after
the event, people could decide what, if anything, they wanted to
donate. I would make the donations anonymous, whether done there or
later by mail, so no one (including me) would know who paid, or how
much. No obligation, no pressure. Again, I haven't decided to do
this yet, but I'm considering it.

So, if you would attend a FREE "Escaping the Myth" event on July 21
and 22, up in Troy, please fling me an e-mail saying so, and saying
how many people you'd expect to bring along. And please do NOT be
embarrassed to say, "Yeah, I'd go, as long as I don't have to pay
for it!" Given my own situation, that's exactly what I'd say. I
would much rather have 40 or 50 people there, and have 15 decide to
pay something for it, than have only 15 people there. (If this
works this time, this may become my policy for all future "Escaping
the Myth" events, too.)

(P.S. If I decide to do this, I would refund what people have
already paid for tickets. Then they could decide afterward whether
it was worth paying for again.)

(P.P.S. Feel free to forward this message around to any other
Michiganders who you think might be interested.)
